English Lover

Assalamualaikum and hello English language lovers (and also confessions-lovers). First thing first I want to thank admin for publishing this post (if it is published). What I am about to write is on my concern about the pronunciation of words when we want to combine and pronounce them faster, i.e. “walked in”. Disclaimer: I speak and write no perfect English and please correct me if any mistakes or errors are done in this post and I really really appreciate that as I am still learning this very language. I thought about sharing this with you guys because I noticed some people have mispronounced the kinds of words that I wanted to share and I also thought that this was the best possible way to voice out my concern.

[Combining words in pronunciation]

When we want to combine and pronounce two words faster, we will pronounce the consonant sound of the first word inserting to the vowel sound of the second word. For example, “walked” + “in”. For these words, we can pronounce “walked” and “in” separately (of course with the sound “d” at the end of “walked”). But in this case, we can say “walked in” as in “walkdin”. The “d” is “inserted into “i” resulting to be “din” sound. You can notice the pronunciation of “walked in” in Taylor Swift’s song called I knew you were trouble. It is like when we say “I need it” faster as in “I needit”.

Another good example is LinkedIn (a social networking website that looks more or less like Facebook but for those who are looking for job or internship and it is more professional). For this word, usually people will pronounce it very quickly and briefly so it becomes “linkdin” instead of “linked” “in”. And the example goes on and on i.e. watched it, saved it, looked at, moved into……..

I hope this very short and sweet sharing is helpful and may Allah ease and give us understanding in learning English language and any other languages. Thank you for investing your time for reading this post. All the best in finals.
