Show-Off Parents Syndrome

I have a short story. I was spending a nice weekend with my family when suddenly our long relatives come to visit. Particularly want to visit my mother.

Without invitation, without special occasion, without any prior notice. They rarely comes visit and it was a rather pleasant surprise.

We welcome them with rushed but proper variety of meals, warmth and open hands.

However the moment she sat down she started to speak about her son who I didn’t even know his name. We showed her some interest at first. You know as a courtesy, being a polite host.

However her antics leave me completely baffled. It just weird how parents love to show off their kids very much. Like the only personality they have is being parents.

I’m not judging, far from hating but this madness need to be stopped. If only they know that people listening to you didn’t really like you, or whatever your kid-related never ending stories. This is facts, I don’t want to sugarcoat it.

These obsessed moms probably don’t really have accomplishment in their life, thus projecting the success and the ‘look how clever my kid is so I am clever too’ through their kids.

I have 3 siblings, all of us work in professional field too. But never once I saw my parents overshare and showing off like that. Probably because my mom already got her own achievement herself?

Still, I don’t know the psychology behind this show-off parents syndrome.

It is sad, considering these moms once a woman full of personalities. Maybe a career driven woman, maybe a quirky and funny one. Why? Just why?

The fact that all of this personalities gone once you become a mom is so saddening. So pathetic.

At some point, when this gone too far I feel like these moms have mental illness. Showing off illness.

They can go hours talking about only their kids and never themselves. Is there nothing interesting going in your life at all?
