Kerjaya Engineer Dalam Bidang Semikonduktor II

Untuk part I, ( https://iiumc.com/kerjaya-engineer-dalam-bidang-semikonduktor/ )

Assalamualaikum, Bunga is back!

Aku cuba sedaya upaya translate into layman terms. Hahaha.

Pity you maybe you hired/worked with wrong people compared to thousands out there that can do better jobs (crossed fingers).

Tapi untuk industri semiconductor specifically frontend engineer situasi underpaid tersebut agak berbeza sedikit bagi pendapat aku, which is kami dibayar agak deserving even as a fresh grads berbanding engineer fresh grads bidang lain di Malaysia.

So tolak tepi jap pasal gaji engineer.

Aku masih lagi setia with this MNC company yang hire aku since aku graduate.

In specific involve in circuit IC design and simulation.

Kalau panjang masa kami as designer ni akan tarik nafas lega la sebab timeline panjang.

Kalau pendek tu kena istighfar banyak-banyak sikit sebab nak bukan senang tau nak design satu-satu IPs especially kalau product tu still baru dalam pasaran. Tempoh nak design tu aku tak boleh reveal lah since PnC kan, hahaha.

Firstly, aku basically kerja as Circuit Design Engineer. Aku kena design schematic based on spec according to projects. Susah ke design ni.

Kalau nak cakap senang tu tak mungkin la sebab memang susah pun. Kena crack head design something yang at the end product tu tak terbakar or cepat rosak in layman term.

So setiap design mesti aim on high performance but low power consumption. Possible ke?

Yes boleh saja, kami as designer boleh saja adjust design based on topology follow apa spec tapi still ada tradeoff lah untuk certain requirement yang diorang kena sacrifice.

Orang cakap setiap kejayaan mesti perlukan pengorbanan. 2 jenis transistor boleh guna bila nak buat design which is Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) and Field Effect Transistor(FET) where their usage depends on application jugak, untuk more powerful and wide range application mestilah FET.

Of course as claimed lagi kecil process nodes lagi power performance. Back to my job, so lepas aku dapat spec aku kena la start design.

Untuk level aku, still kena harapkan senior untuk decide what is the best for that particular design sebab banyak experience kan. Aku masih tak ada magic untuk tahu yes this topology can works unless aku architect for next 30 years aku akan tahu lah kot, hahaha.

That hunch will take decades to be one of them. There will be lots of debugging process. So kerja aku akan run saja lah simulation sampai aku dapat waveform and data aku expected guna EDA tools.

Secondly, lepas dah rasa design stable and functional boleh la hantar ke layout engineer untuk translate every transitor and wire yang aku lukis kedalam bentuk ‘square and rectangle’. Ada lah rule yang design foundary tetapkan so Layout Engineer (Mask Design Engineer) akan follow that rule.

Still perlukan banyak efford untuk lukis semua tu dari floorplan sampai la buat routing. Step ni first filter lah, kena make sure DRV and LVS clean at the end. Kalau pertengahan jalan circuit designer nak tukar something boleh buat gaduh.

Especially kalau dah siap semua pastu ada changes sometimes kena buat balik semua semula, jadi as circuit design sangat penting untuk belajar buat decision supaya tak buat kerja dua kali(eh silap mesti lebih dua kali punya changes) tapi at least make sure schedule tak impact.

So after layout dah siap. Circuit designer pulak lah kena re-simulate balik make sure pre-layout and post-layout margin tak lari jauh. So both layout and circuit kena main perananlah fix this issue. That’s the hassle.

Thirdly, at same time kena circuit kena flatten jadi netlist untuk translate ke RTL pulak. This role will played by RTL Engineer pulak.

So RTL format macam coding lah based tapi structure based on schematic pin names yang aku design. This step as checking saja samada schematic yang aku design keluar output tak.

Biasa la circuit deisgner pun buat silap kadang PMOS NMOS connection tertukar pun tak perasan, sebab bukan 1 saja transistor yang diguna tapi beribu. RTL is the second filter for us.

Fourthly, dah semua 1st to 3rd step habis sampai la masa hantar semua data ke Physical Designer Engineer(PD) untuk lengkapkan whole IPs floorplan. Basically PD akan lengkapkan all the puzzle untuk susun semua I/Os block position dalam chipset. Basically kerja PD more to automation.

Diorang akan guna script untuk automatically susun all the I/Os blocks. Lagi sekali circuit designer pun kena main important roles untuk provide all info that PD’s wants.

Last but not least Design Validation Engineer(DV) akan guna code untuk translate all the the schematic untuk validate all the output. Macam mana diorang code aku pun tak pasti tapi ada la software diorang guna untuk monitor output waveform.

So DV is our last filter in case ada missing something. Since tak pernah directly buat kerja dengan DV, job scope diorang aku pun kurang pasti. Tapi ada jugak I/Os yang perlukan DV validation as checking.

Segala apa yang aku cerita dekat sini based on personal experience untuk bagitau whole process yang aku hadap as design engineer. Dulu aku tak pernah tahu pun kerjaya ni wujud, berjaya masuk bidang ni sebab FYP related to design.

So bakal graduate engineer boleh la aim to fit yourself into any of this design engineer position yang aku mention kat atas based on your strength.

To make sure our design success we need to play each other roles. As a circuit designer, I need to rely on other teams to validate the design.

Hopefully nukilan aku ni dapat buka mata semua generasi baru this career path should be one of the child dream when they grow up.

I want to educate that, be an engineer that we always heard not only need to know how to operate machines that need physical strength but it’s beyond that if you enter this semiconductor field.

Plus your hard work will pay you every penny. Your income is based on skills for this job trust me.

Just do your job in front of the laptop and deliver your job into thin air. We need a new generation that can create new things because everything is possible as we are already at IR4.0 now. Ilmu ni sangat luas kalau kita berjaya apply untuk bawa kebaikan untuk masyarakat.

Aku tak nafikan sepanjang perjalanan tu akan ada ja drama nak resign, menangis bucu meja, kerja sampai lewat kat office lepastu sambung balik buat kerja dekat rumah,

Tak sempat makan, kesihatan bit terabai (now aku dah try improve this part badan nak guna lama kan, haha), kurang masa untuk orang tersayang dan macam-macamlah.

Tapi at the end bila berjaya tapeout lepas go thru semua stress ni rasa macam magic saja sebab kita tahu kita berjaya contribute something untuk masyarakat. It’s something that someone need to do this job so that our society will get the benefits from it.

Every difficulties that I have been go thru in the process I can say it’s my sacrifice so that my family and friends can sleep tight at night.

Kepada kawan-kawan aku yang tak pernah penat dengar aku merungut sebab stress kerja thanks sangat sebab tu sebenarnya real comfort yang buat aku bertahan sampai sekarang. Thanks guys. Doakan aku terus bertahan untuk capai plan aku next 30 years.

Now I still single right so will stick to that plan and yes, you maybe right, but our life plans not rigid, we can always change according to our situation.

What I plan today may not same in next 30 years that I wish to become. But its’s okay at least I can told my future kids that I used to work as engineer so I can inspire them to become like 20’s years old of me too. But you still a looser who downgrade others dreams to cover your failure. XOXO.

Last part aku nak jawab few soalan dekat comments section.

1. Q: How to enter semiconductor industry?

A: Make sure your degree subject suitable fill in position that I mention above(frontend engineer). ‘Usually’ this position will hire someone from E&E background.

But for backend and assembly not limited to E&E, other courses still can fit into position as semiconductor engineer especially at factory as long you have engineering degree. You can google the Job Desription(JD) in company website so you can know their requirements.

2. Q: How to apply job and get job?

A: Faster way is applying thru LinkedIn, make sure your profile becomes 5 stars in order for people to start noticing your account, the strong profile will have better reach for recruiters.

I always get private messages that they hiring a new person, am I open to that new opportunity (so far I’m still happy with my current company, not planning for any career change yet, so I will reject politely).

Also can apply directly at company websites. Make sure your resume structure can impress the hiring manager especially with good CGPA and good external achievement related to engineering competition during uni days. Plus your FYP project, if related to company business it will have good chances.

After all, you still need to impress them during the interview. If you still study start sending your resume during the 3rd year until you manage to land a job you dream off. Start early and don’t give up even after tons of rejection.

3. Q: Nurture coding skilll?

A: Is possible yes, it can be a good skill set for you. But coding needs to have an interest. For me I’m not really into coding. But I do have the basics of executing a simple script, not a complicated one. Mostly, circuit designers do not use coding excessively.

Only physical design and validation engineers will extremely need coding skills. For circuit designers just make sure we have strong fundamentals to design circuits and debugging circuits.

4. Q: List of semiconductor company?

A: I think to list everything quite hassle. This I took from MIDA Twitter. Its legit government Twitter account : https://twitter.com/OfficialMIDA/status/1218757035753271296/photo/1

Okay sampai sini saya rasanya confession aku. Rasanya aku dah cover semua part pasal kerja aku. In Shaa Allah kalau nanti ada cerita menarik pasal kerjaya aku akan akan tulis lagi in future. Nak tulis ni pun ambil masa berbulan untuk aku siapkan sebab busy.

Hahahah. But, I won’t stop educate people to know about this field. Maaf untuk segala silap kata. Thanks.
